Inaccurate Information About Breastfeeding

While WTEWYE gives some listing of benefits of breastfeeding, it does not go into detail. It also makes it seem like formula is almost as good.

It lists many so-called benefits to formula feeding, such as not being tied down, being able to work full time, go shopping, etc. It fails to mention the option of pumping - many women, even those working full time, successfully pump breastmilk to maintain their breastfeeding relationship and to maintain all of the health benefits of nursing.

Given how much the book elaborates on all the things that "can go wrong" with your pregnancy or childbirth experience, it is stunning that all the things that can "go wrong" with formula feeding are not enumerated: increased ear infections, increased diarrhea, lower immunities, increased food allergies, decreased IQ, etc. Not to mention that science is constantly discovering properties of breastmilk vital to development, and that breastmilk changes constantly depending on your baby's needs. Formula cannot even begin to replicate human breastmilk.

WTEWYE says that colostrum (your first milk) contains antibodies that MAY be important in protecting the baby against diseases, etc. MAY? MAY be important? That's like saying that fruits and vegetables contain fiber and other nutrients that MAY be important to your digestive health and overall well-being.

This book also tells you that you have to wean if you get pregnant, and that you shouldn't breastfeed for more than a year… All wrong!

Additionally, the authors state the belief that an advantage of bottle-feeding (and implicitly a disadvantage of breastfeeding) is that bottle-feeding doesn't dictate diet (i.e. you can eat all the garlic, spicy food, and cabbage that you want)! Garlic & spicy foods are staples in many areas of the world. I really doubt that breastfeeding rates are low in those countries. This is very old and inaccurate information!

In summation

I personally feel that the success of WTEWYE is the clever title and marketing of the book. So many women express dissatisfaction with the information and tone contained in its pages. Please, if you are interested in learning more about pregnancy & birth, choose a book that will affirm the joys of pregnancy, encourage you to trust your instincts and make you feel confident in your ability to birth!
